Professor Nugent completed a PhD in physics at the Australian National University and continued on to become a world-renowned researcher best known for his pioneering work on x-ray physics.  He is a two-time ARC Federation Fellow, he led an ARC Centre of Excellence, was Director of the Australian Synchroton, and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
