A legacy of leadership. A pathway home.

This fund honours the life and legacy of Mr Ross Mandi Wunungmurra — a respected Yolŋu elder, visionary, and bridge-builder. Mr Wunungmurra played an influential role in shaping the work of the National Centre for Indigenous Genomics (NCIG), driven by his deep commitment to the wellbeing of his people and future generations.

A leader in both his community of Galiwin’ku, North East Arnhem Land, Mr Wunungmurra called for respectful repatriation of historical samples and recognition of the potential of genomics to support Yolŋu health and autonomy. His advocacy led to the return of more than 200 Yolŋu samples in 2019, a moment of great cultural significance and healing.

Through this fund, we carry forward his vision.

The Mr R M Wunungmurra Community Repatriation Fund supports NCIG’s ongoing efforts – under Indigenous leadership – to return biological samples to their communities of origin if they wish it.

By contributing, you help us continue this vital work of cultural restoration, respect, and reconnection — and you walk alongside Mr Wunungmurra’s legacy of unity, strength, and progress for Indigenous peoples.
